Challenging the Status Quo!

People Changing Places: York was a 12 month creative programme that aimed to raise awareness and people's aspirations about good design in the public realm, provide opportunities for multi-disciplinary working and engage communities in the regeneration of their local environment.

We aimed to:

  • Develop a methodology for engaging the public in placemaking that can be used on other sites in York
  • Raise aspirations of good design and high quality public realm
  • Develop understanding of placemaking and how people use public space
  • Explore the nature of connectivity and wayfinding in the context of the site
  • Encourage partnership working to develop sustainable working relationships
  • Challenge perceptions of what sort of place York should be

Working in collaboration with the City of York Council Beam developed an interactive programme of workshops, events and training for the local community and Council Members and officers.
